The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a recall of President’s Choice fresh beef products that may contain E. coli. A news release Tuesday said that President’s Choice fresh steaks, roasts and ground beef with best-before dates ranging from April 29 to June 16 may contain the harmful bacteria.President’s Choice frozen beef products are not listed in the recall.
These products were available at nine retail stores in Atlantic Canada: Atlantic Superstore, SaveEasy, Cash & Carry, Valu-Mart, Real Canadian Wholesale Club, Dominion, Freshmart, Red & White and Quick Mart.
The agency is recommending that consumers check their freezers and dispose of any products that may be affected.
Consumers will not be able to smell or see if the beef is contaminated and cooking it may not kill the bacteria, the agency said.
President’s Choice beef that may be contaminated with E. coli 0157:H7 could cause serious illness. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. The agency warns that the illness could be life-threatening.
A full list of products and information about E. coli is available on the agency’s website, www.inspection.gc.ca, or by calling 1-800-442-2342.
