The Insurance Bureau of Canada wants the City of Ottawa to pay more attention to its aging infrastructure because of repeated flooding and sewer backup claims by the Ottawa residents.
Dennis Prouse, IBC’s director of federal government relations, said “This is everybody’s issue. It (flooding) continues to be a problem.”
The basements were used to be a place to store family possessions of little value, however, over the years these have evolved into living spaces with very expensive equipment like home theatre systems. That is why the value of claims has really shot up.
The torrential downpour on July 24,2009 caused sewers back up and rain penetrated foundations in hundreds of homes Kanata’s Glen Cairn community. It’s the third time since 1997 that some homeowners have fallen victim to flooding or sewer backups, and a few have had their insurance companies refuse to cover future flood damage. (Source)
Most of the companies had increased the insurance premium due to sewers back up and flooding about a year ago in Ottawa region.
