On August 5, 2009, Justice Douglas Cunningham, associate chief justice of Ontario’s Superior Court, will give the verdict on Larry O’Brien’s case who is accused of offering to use his influence to get Terry Kilrea an appointment to the National Parole Board in exchange for Kilrea’s withdrawal from the 2006 mayoral race. Larry O’Brien is the sitting mayor of Ottawa.
In case Larry O’Brien is convicted, not only he will be removed from office as per Ontario’s Municipal Elections Act but also be ineligible to run for municipal office for six years.
Furthermore, both Criminal Code charges carry maximum penalties of five years in prison. However, there are some chances that O’Brien as a first-time offender who poses no discernible risk to the public may likely face a conditional sentence served in the community.
